Canopy Glow (2008)

When I closed my eyes in Nonis field
We were lying on our backs.

I dreamt that the ground split a seam,
our spirits, floating.

When no longer tied into our bodies,
We left them (wrapping)
As a sign, to slip into the crack.
Tired and ready to go.

But I dont know what goes on.
I touched my grandfathers face,
He lay fixed in his casket.

He lay sewn shut and folded
So that none could refuse it.

They had posed, they had painted him.
I laughed. I let him go.
His cheeks washed like watercolor sunlight, evening time.
I could never put my hands back to them.

Still, I dont know what goes on.
Will my thoughts burn in unseen patterns?
Form a dim glow in your mind,
Long after you remember who it was that I looked like?

We saw the sky, swarming full with the light that the fireflies made.
An accidental constellation.

You, how will you go?
Out through your mouth in a sigh?
Into a space we dont know.

Canopy Glow (2008)

Most of us have heard crashing so loud.
We hear a constant wave that spins between our temples piercing content with its sound.
We lost the 20,000s several years ago.
Gradually we feel it washing blank the range in which we hold the things we know.
Put your ear to a hummingbird's wing.
Place the hum against the ring.
Listen to its still and violent motion making.
Treading water.
We are dense waves.
We don't float.
Our stories all just sink below the mess of wake the millions of paddled palms our cupped hands make.
Overhead the goose flies low, necks curve darted straight as compass needle, dislocated from his mate.
He found her body rafting toward the mouth of the river when she disappeared with the current underneath the tree trunk bridge.
Out toward the mouth.
Out with the spilling water.
We saw it coming like a spirit soars directed.
Gunshot smoke and a sinking thereafter.
He fell fast to the ocean while the red painted feathers floated down.
John Audubon thought about the wiring as he swam toward the twisted neck and the broken boat body bobbed.
Examining the belly for the bullet's tiny piercing, he cried, "Oh!"
When a secret fluttered, a migrant hummer detached its grip.
Overhead his heart sped spooked and we splashed as the gail swung cold and some fish folded in the crest slap.
It lapped at our heads, but we received it like a reprimand that we were too consumed by motion to perceive or understand.
John J. Audubon, his gifted replication.
Painted with precision, perfect vision like the shot stain.
And the whole world swam in deaf anticipation til the goose fell like a shed shell from which the humming secret sprang.

High water carried her down stream
She watched the water's living things
She thought, it's not a mound with six planks of wood
The cardinal points to hold you up
Or a mountain where a shed self could

Feed the roots and honor the tongues of the animals
Drift into the moss and bloat where the peat bog pulls

Rolled like a felled tree
With arms as useless as such
Death's panic came, a calmness stayed, you couldn't do much
Just watch the water chip away at the bank eroding
Cut and crumbling through the spate

It took a father, it covered a daughter
Took her down, down, down
With the glass bottles, books, a tire
Collected hair tufts in the weeds
Snagged and wrapped in the peats
Dammed and trapped

You said, is this the ceremony?
I don't know, well I don't mind
The way we all fall in and roll down
Pushed through the veins and trafficked byes
And when your ears sit under
Head is half submerged down below
Pooling all accounts of peace while passed beneath the canopy glow

Canopy Glow (2008)

You paper cut the air above the tundra when you came back in silence, in sheets, and the neighbors called me up out of my sleep to watch you unfold the blanket.
Wrap me back into the womb.
The first thought is fear, and brother, it emits a crippling bend.
A shame you can't know that you carry until you've seen it offered down.
Watching shielded in the silence, shielded in the knowledge that has no use for language.
Standing on the lawn at a distance.
Watching shielded in the silence, shielded in the knowledge that has no use for language.
Standing on the lawn until you wish to be crushed in its collisions.
You paper cut the air above the tundra when you came back in silence, in sheets and the neighbors called me up.

Canopy Glow (2008)

When I can't find the word I'm looking for
or I reach into the drawer with four tries
but nothing sticks, there's no telling why I opened it.
I try, but I just forget.
What there once was, I have not forgotten.
What there once was, it won't leave me alone.
The synapses still fire and direct my thoughts,
they just seem tired of hunting for homes.
And I'm not brave enough to say that I am not afraid,
should I return to confused bits of blindness,
a tongue wanting words in the sweet speech finds a form,
then returned to the bald toothless need of a child hunched and cradled
(his spine returns the curl to fit the cleft of an arm).
O, we are embarked and return to the place we start to thrash against it.
It's a wild thing to accept, and who can hold it?
Think about the loss of anything.
Well, someday if you wake to a nameless stranger in me, lead me outside.
Let me go.
If I'm already there, just let me go.
I'm not.

Canopy Glow (2008)

When you get up
When you wake up
Put your hands up
Pick yourself up
And you pull yourself up underneath the dugout cubby enclave of the sidewalk overhang,
cement buckled upward and the rain came dripping through the crack.
We hear the voice of Italo sing of a holy fire.
When he stomped,
the dirt fell on our eyes.
Hell, he stomped.
It was a mystery to me when you crawled out from underneath the sidewalk overhang.
Cemment buckled upward and the rain cam dripping through the crack.
We heard the voice of Italo sing.
In the second zone of the city a baby born in the nightclub mold where goons dry heave the factory glue all crust-lipped and bloddy nosed.
Fire took the roof off,
hollowing the carcass
(licked it like a bone).
Sway and mone to songs of some pitchless praise,
stoned.

An astronaut lost his finger to the back of a grain truck
and I can't stop thinking about it. I'm thinking about it.
Isn't everything strange?
Buildings as brick boxes to be opened,
turned sideways and cracked.

Except the what? that is inside is much too fluid, too fast.
The you and I that spiral past the windowsill,
the fire escape is on its back,
watching us swallowed up in the blue and green.
Flaring in the air with the vapor trails from all the first pages.
The same two color contrails that twist around
every other color left crowded out.
A record played.
The lights go out.
The Cineplex screen presents new strangled spectrums.
We we mean swallowed up in the blue and green.
1979 in a field with a bloody thumb.
Alone with the whir of the grain wheel hum.
Ten years since he saw us all.
He came back to never look another in the eye the same way again.
He walked inside, put his finger in the ice and didn't flinch at all.

You were baptized by a dollop from a cool whip bowl
(finger flung)
Sulfer water, holy water from the drinking fountain of the high school cafeteria
Among the great cloud when Margie whispered "Amen"

bulletins slapped back at the heat to move the moist dead air
I was still unborn, but I have heard the first hand
and Jack says that the body of love
and the hearts thereof can be baptized in the heads of their own sweat
Salt rings like the outlined shroud on the tomb of your skin
We saw it on the VHS
The building stood erect
The march and the singing tongues processed
The crucifix cut from Styrofoam swung flung over your shoulder
raining golden glitter from the glue-gun boarder
We thought about the easy yoke
My mind, my heart, choked

Floating World (2006)

Yesterday, the land went dry.
I sprinkled ash of my neighbor's urn
Over the yard.

Sprinkled in the hope
That should I cut out

A pie wedge,
I would find gold.
Buried in the ground
Between the grass and growth.

Instead, the earth skin cracking
And a great wind, more ash,
Slivers of the ground burning in the eyes
Of ones, who, standing there...

Long ago, when it all began
The dog would dig the ground
And whisper, "Master, come to the garden.
By your hand to the spade, cut away behind your house.

Cut away for coins. Cut away to the buried..."

One: became the widowed son.
Them, to me, "Out of sight, out of mind."
Someone said that to me and I smiled.

Two: Listen as he sings through you.

Three: Close your eyes and feel alive.
Did you really feel it in his side?
No, it's just like him, but it's not him.
Without the beating, this feeling is guaranteed.

Oh and I hide my face in the shade.
When I find my old place in the shade.
And I hide.

Anata wa mae kara
Ushiro kara,
Watashi o tori kakomi.
Mi te o watashi no ue ni
O kare mashita.

You hem me in
behind and before;
you have laid
your hand upon me.

Floating World (2006)

Someday they will build monuments for us.
People like me walk out the door,
We'll pull you out into the streets
Of far off countries. If I'm ready to go,
How could I let you dwell in delight?

Oh see, all things are so bright and spiritual.
These seeds are growing in extraordinary colors.
Convinced? Even I believe that I have grown something.
It's cased in light.

Don't you worry about me, I'm gone.
Don't you worry about me.
I'm off in a distant place

Where I can be the signifier,
Not that which is signified.
The referent, convincing us (you and me both),
For you, my smile is like bow, bow, bow, bow.

Out here there is no 'under the skin.'
And the form of every other
Is hidden under covers.

Let us sleep
In ease of dark.

We couldn't rest
With this sense of duty hanging off of our chests.
Peeled away, we had to get back from where the
Grip of our hands could lift us from the failures
In the eyes of men, to form our scales and weigh
Our words, good again.
To form our scales in the eyes of men,
To weigh our words
And make ourselves good again.

Floating World (2006)

Through silence,
When something fell,
I saw a smear of red across
The neighbor's leg.

The land was dry as dead.
He crawled with dripping heels.

Trailing black bits followed out of the mound,
Clung to the speckled skin where glue blood spattered.

I saw a bone, a nail hooked and hanging from the foot of man.
I knew he thought it dead.

Knelt down,
I dipped my hand, an urn,
Into the mound.

Gathered all the parts together
And cupped my fingers as a cover.

I ran faster to the trees whose blossoms
Dried into grey exoskeletons.

i climbed from limb to limb.
Cracked the oldest spines.
Some would snap and some would fall.

I knew he thought it dead.
When I could see it all,
The barren, closed, and dry,

The ash took from my palm
And danced down white.

Come green! The trees to bloom!
(O hana! Buds, split open!)
Wash the heel of man
And lick the wound.

Floating World (2006)

Oh, night set on when I fell down
In the corner of the field.
Cuckoo, I too sang,
Spit the blood of welling thougohts.

Waking with a hundred grains.
Salt stains ringing 'round my legs.
I could not face you.

Since I don't know my father,
I won't be a son.
In morning when words rise up
Like the echo of a stone axe,
Some demon in me wants to rise up
And walk away.

When I am alone in the day.
At night when I am going without clothes
I see your knees where I would sit,
The purple chair,
Golden trim hedged 'round.

I hid myself underneath my father
With the robes of a son.
In the morning when words rose up
Like the echo of a stone axe.
Some demon in me crawled out
And ran away.

I remember when I took the gifts
Asking you for everything,
Throw your name in the well.
i sink, and sink.

Sink.
